Fun weekend with added practical bonus

This weekend was great. I felt I wanted to get out of the city a bit so I spent a couple of days by the coast spear fishing. Meanwhile I thought about my training and what has been missing. For a while I have felt a bit unmotivated and "chubby feeling" without actually being able to figure out what had changed.

What struck my mind was that I had become a bit more comfortable in my life. Saying that, I do still think I am a fit and healthy man but to a degree I had let myself become a bit lazy.

Over the last couple of months I have eaten out more often, used processed foods such as bread, pre-made sauces and low fat dairy product a bit too much. When I really think about it there is no reason why I shouldn't just sharpen up and start cooking more wholesome foods again.

I decided that I should do a six week block where I should focus more about the quality of the food I am eating. More fruit and vegetable, less eating out and less processed foods. I got a DEXA scan done at Measure Up in Sydney and will do a re-test in six weeks. I will post the progress where for you who are interested to see what a change of food quality means for your body.

Lucky I got a great start of the week as I got some great fresh fish spearing. It does not come much cleaner and fresher than this.

Who is allowed on the couch

Just wanted to post this. Is this normal for a dog watching tv and having a snuggle?

Dynamic apnea

I am amazed how fast the learning curve is in free-diving. Today it was time for this weeks dynamic apnea session. I haven't got a pair of decent fins yet so in a borrowed pair of Ruku fins I broke a new record. 75 m! Stoked

Wo-hoo push it a bit more

New personal best in static apnea. Did a few 2 minute tables then after some rest, 3 min breath hold. Felt good, should be able to push it a bit more but don't want to rush it too much.

I can say that I was shooting with both Matt and Blake. Exciting times all right!

Favorite video right now..

I know this whole free-diving business is getting pretty frequent updates at the moment but I just had to post this video. Almost 8.5m views should explain how good this is. I was proud over my new dynamic apnea record at 65 m. This both freaks me out and fascinates me.

AussieBum photo shoot Day 1 of 2

Today I had a last minute call from the guys at aussieBum to come in a do a photo shoot. As usual the impulsive jobs are the best. I cannot say to much as we shoot some up-and-coming products but I must say I am really excited about the shoot getting published.

I will keep you updated as soon as I got something to show. Looking forward to what tomorrow got to bring.

New personal best

A couple of weeks ago I joined up with Sydney free-divers to work on my breath hold. After applying the tips I got from the guys and working a couple of times in the pool it was time for todays Static apnea session.

My first go was pretty moderate as I did not feel right and I decided to surface at 1.30 min. I thought about it and realized that running to the pool is probably not the best as my heart rate would have been elevated still. I watched a couple of guys do their job with times between 2 minutes and 4.25 min.

The next try was much better, 2.30 and a new personal best. Later during the session I succeeded to push it a bit longer and finished up on 2.45 minutes. Pretty happy with that effort.

First two sharks ticked off the list:)

Today was a great day and I decided to head to Long bay for a spear fishing session. Had such a great day and came home with one leather jacket and one Luderick. Seem like I get some fresh fish this week after all.

I have never caught or cooked either fish before so I guess so it is trail and error. Either way, they are both in the fridge filleted and ready to pan fry.

The highlight of the day was still out encounter with two wobbegong sharks. I would lie if I didn't flinch once I saw the 170 cm silhouette swimming next to me as I poked my head into a cave to see if there was any fish in there. Later on we saw another one laying around on the rocks. Pretty cool creatures though... once I realized it was a wobbegong and not something more fierce.

Morwong dinner

As I mentioned in my previous entry I went spearfishing and caught two red morwongs. I am not a fan of bones so even though the fish wasn't more than 30-40 cm I decided to do a boneless fillet. I did an old favorite with walnut batter and a cold yogurt based sauce.

This meal is a bit more energy dense than I normally would recommend but the quality is good so as long as it fits in with you daily calorie intake it should be a great friday weekend meal.

Red morwong with potato, carrot and yogurt dressing (2 Serv)
(679 calories, 55g protein, 48g carbs, 30g fat)

4 boneless filleets (400g)
1 Tbsp wheat flour
50 g walnuts (ground)
1 eggs
Salt, Lemon pepper
4 tsp olive oil

250 g potato
200 g baby carrots

200 ml natural low fat yogurt
2 Tbsp gurkin-relish
1 Tbsp wholegrain mustard
salt, pepper

Boil the potato and carrots in plenty of salted water. Make the yogurt-dressing by combining all the ingredients and season after taste. When the potato got about 10 minutes to go use a non-stick fry pan and add the olive oil. Use a paper towel to dry the fish before giving it a light sprinkle of wheat flour and season with lemon pepper and salt. Brush of all excess.

The just before putting the fish into the pan dip it a lightly whipped egg then in the ground up walnuts. Cook on medium heat for about 3-4 minutes each side until golden brown.

Red Morwong dinner

This morning we went for a spear fishing trip. With some luck I sorted out dinner in little over in an hour. 2 red morwong between 30 and 40 cm long. A short time later they where both cleaned and filleted ready for the frying pan. I will keep you updated how they turned out.

What kind of summer is this?

I am getting a bit frustrated with our summer for the moment. Sure it is pretty warm with tops in the 30's but when the forecast has promised rain for the next 10 days or so.... what do you do?

As you know I have taken up free-diving once more. Last time I was in my teens in Sweden so I thought I needed a refresher. On that note I will be participating in Sydney free-divers introduction night tonight. With some practice I hope to be back on a bit deeper water pretty soon.

This is our last day in the water... pushing it though as the water was ok but the clouds where hanging around most of the day. At least Hua got another day on the beach:)
